In a major development for the artificial intelligence sector, Anthropic has unveiled plans to significantly increase its compute resources through an expanded partnership with Google Cloud. This strategic move will involve the utilization of up to one million Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to bolster Anthropic’s AI research and product development efforts.
Enhancing AI Capabilities
According to a recent announcement by Anthropic, this expansion represents a multi-billion dollar investment, expected to bring over a gigawatt of capacity online by 2026. Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, emphasized the efficiency and strong price-performance of TPUs, noting their integral role in Google’s AI accelerator portfolio, which includes the latest seventh-generation TPU, known as Ironwood.
Meeting Growing Demand
Anthropic currently serves over 300,000 business customers, with a significant increase in large accounts over the past year. This expansion aims to meet the rising demand for advanced AI capabilities, enabling more comprehensive testing, alignment research, and responsible AI deployment at scale. Krishna Rao, CFO of Anthropic, highlighted the importance of this expansion for maintaining cutting-edge AI models, particularly for their flagship product, Claude.
Diversified Compute Strategy
The company employs a diversified compute strategy, utilizing Google’s TPUs, Amazon’s Trainium, and NVIDIA’s GPUs. This approach ensures sustained advancements in AI capabilities while fostering strong industry partnerships. Anthropic remains committed to its collaboration with Amazon, particularly through Project Rainier, which involves a vast compute cluster utilizing hundreds of thousands of AI chips across multiple U.S. data centers.
